< BACK   Coppetts Wood, May 6th   NEXT>

Coppetts Wood is just a short bus run from my home in North London, but even on a sunny bank holiday Monday was very quiet and thankfully free of joggers. It was a surprise to see the first dragonfly of the year, but as usual it was a Large Red Damselfly. This female has a lot of black on her body, the male is a lovely brick-red.

As usual there were hoverflies everywhere, and as usual they were difficult to identify (only a few have common names):
Platycheirus tarsalis
Sphaerophoria sp.
Melanostoma scalare

Butterflies seen were Peacock, Small White, Orange-tip (male and female), Brimstone and Specled Wood:
Speckled Wood

Spring flowers were out in force:
Forget-me-not
Bluebells
Garlic Mustard
Charlock
Green Alkanet
